Demons in the North Atlantic: Variability of Deep Ocean Ventilation

نویسندگان

چکیده

Translation of atmospheric forcing variability into the ocean interior via ventilation is an important aspect transient climate change. On a seasonal timescale in subtropics, this translation mediated by so-called “Demon” that prevents access to all except late-winter mixed-layer water. Here, we use eddy-permitting numerical circulation model investigate similar process operating on longer (interannual) timescales subpolar North Atlantic. We find variations are their interior, with year-to-year changes mixed layer depth being critical factor. The signature persistent strong driving deep layers preferentially ventilated when ceased. Susceptibility effect depends location and density subduction—with rate at which newly water escapes its region subduction crucial

Predicting multi-year North Atlantic Ocean variability

24 We assess the skill of retrospective multi-year forecasts of North Atlantic ocean 25 characteristics obtained with ocean-atmosphere-sea ice models that are initialized with 26 estimates from the observed ocean state. We show that these multi-model forecasts can 27 skilfully predict surface and subsurface ocean variability with lead times of 2 to 9 years. We 28 focus on assessment of forecast...

Variability of the Ocean-atmosphere Fluxes in the North Atlantic

We analyse climate variability in the North Atlantic sea-air fluxes derived from the voluntary observing ship (VOS) data and NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis. An ensemble of VOS climatologies has been produced in by the cross-application of different parameterizations and variable corrections. Interannual to decadal scale variability in both VOS and NCEP/NCAR fluxes is primarily determined by the turbulent...

North Atlantic surface-ocean control of Pleistocene deep-ocean circulation

Deep basins of the North Atlantic were occupied by a cold 13 C-depleted (nutrient-rich) water mass during glaciations, and a warmer 13C-enriched (nutrient-poor) water mass (modern NADW) during interglaciations. This mode of deep-water variability is related directly to migration of the North Atlantic Polar Front. Down-core stable isotope records from the Atlantic and Antarctic suggest that 13C ...

Interannual variability in the North Atlantic Ocean carbon sink.

The North Atlantic is believed to represent the largest ocean sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide in the Northern Hemisphere, yet little is known about its temporal variability. We report an 18-year time series of upper-ocean inorganic carbon observations from the northwestern subtropical North Atlantic near Bermuda that indicates substantial variability in this sink. We deduce that the carbon ...

The Deep Atlantic Ocean

The Atlantic Ocean is a long sinuous ocean which originated during the Mesozoic following the breakup of the supercontinent of Pangea. For most of its length, the eastern and western boundaries are clearly defined by land masses, except where it is separated from the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico by troughs and trenches. The northern and southern limits are more difficult to define. To the n...
